Install Linux Using VirtualBox (Oracle VM VirtualBox)

Well this method we can consider as an easy method or a simpler method, this post actually tells about installing any Linux OS in VirtualBox, Oracle VM VirtualBox is virtualization software, when said more understandingly it enables us to install an OS inside another OS. There are many similar applications like Virtual PC from Microsoft etc. Well we will be considering Virtual box, if you don’t have one you can get it from here : “LINK

Before we start I assume you have enough disk space for the Linux HDD, and a working Linux ISO or CD Image is ready, i`l be using Linux Mint here. If you don’t have one you can get one from any of its websites. For Linux Mint here is the link: "LINK"

OK, now After you install the VirtualBox you will be getting a screen similar to this

Choose New and you will get a new windows which starts the wizard for us. Click Next in that and you will be taken to the next window where you need to give a brief about the OS we are going to install, Type the name of the OS and choose Linux from the Operating System choice.

Now the next thing it asks us is for the amount of memory (RAM) to be allocated for the virtual machine, for a Linux to work 256MB is sufficient but I prefer giving 512MB

Now it demands for the virtual Hard Disk, choose create new disk and click next and it will ask for file type choose any it doesn’t matter much, and then you can choose dynamic or fixed type, I prefer fixed since it is faster.

Next you can choose the location for the disk and size of the disk give at least 10 GB space.

And then create the disk, it may take a while to create the Virtual machine. Once done you have new Virtual Machine which act like a normal Computer.

Now to choose the Linux Mint Disk for the machine follow the steps:
  • * Open Settings
  • * Choose Storage and select Empty
  • * Click on the CD/DVD Icon and select the Linux Mint ISO

Now that you have configured everything you can either run Linux by Live CD or you can install it in the HDD we have created. Click on the Start to Start the Virtual Machine.

It will automatically boot to Linux mint by this live option you can run like a normal Linux but if you want to install it in the Virtual machine, start by clicking the “Install LinuxMint” Icon on the Desktop. It will start the installation wizard. Press the continue button to get to the next screens. In the next screen Choose the Erase disk and install Linux Mint and press continue and then press install now to start the installation procedure. Then it will ask for the basic setup for your region, time zone, keyboard, username, password  etc. chose your option and finish the process.

After the installation choose restart and before the machine starts again unmount the disk
